Made for the GMTK 2021 Game jam. The theme was: "Joined together". Anticipating that the most likely ideas would be joining together characters or movable blocks, I wanted to give something else a try. I wanted to figure out if joining parts of the level together could make for a fun experience.

About the game

SLAM! is a short game prototype, where your world consists of 3 adjacent rooms. In order to navigate the level, you'll have to strategically separate and join rooms together. The primary goal is to find the exit, but grab all the credits you can on your way out. The game ranks your performance based on the number of deaths, collected credits, and run time. You can speed run your way to the exit, but for top marks **ba-dum-tss**, you'll need to get all the credits, without dying, within a certain time limit.

Controls

  • Move/jump: WASD
  • Swap room: X (you must be near the edge of a room)
  • Confirm dialog: X
  • Restart level: ENTER > Reset cart

Uhh, I won in like two seconds bc from the green room I changed the yellow room and could just exit lol. But either way it was an amazing game!

Good mechanic! I think a little bit of the movement could be slowed down since sometimes you have NO time to react. The wall jumping, gravity and movespeed all seem a little fast.

This was definitely the most fleshed out idea I have played so far. Really cute style, fun controls, great level design/planning, and everything felt super intuitive. You did a great job.

I definitely didn't cheat by going back to the first room with a wall jump and going up out of bounds

I love the concept, super original! It's like a Metroidvania all folded up on itself, or like room-randomizing mods. I'd love to see some more levels, but definitely quality over quantity (I really appreciate that it doesn't reset the whole game if you die).
